In Cuerva, the dominant substrate is composed mainly of granite, gneiss and other igneous rocks, representing more than 80% of the ground materials. These lithologies provide a foundation with high bearing capacity for the foundations, being little susceptible to significant settlement due to their high compactness and strength. The occasional presence of slates, schists and a smaller fraction of fine sands and silts introduces some local variations, although generally the risk associated with loss of bearing capacity is low throughout most of the municipality.

The region has high seismicity, with 200 recorded events over the last 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 5.1, which requires that structural design take into account seismic actions in buildings. The non-clayey substrate rules out the risk of expansivity, and the absence of karst areas limits the geotechnical constraints to lithological variability and the response to seismic ground movements, which are the main aspect to be assessed in geotechnical studies for foundations.
