In Cudillero, the dominant substrate is formed mainly by slates and schists, which gives the ground low permeability characteristics and adequate strength for typical foundations, provided that compact level is reached. Detrital materials such as sandstones, conglomerates and flysch occur only very sporadically, so they rarely take part in bearing capacity. The majority presence of impermeable formations implies that natural drainage is limited, a factor to be taken into account when defining water discharge systems and a safe foundation level.

The seismicity in Cudillero is very low, with only 5 recorded events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 2.5, which minimises the influence of seismic actions on structural designs. It should be noted that, given the nature of the non-clayey substrate, the risk of expansivity can be ruled out. However, the possible presence of karstic phenomena requires verification prior to the design of any foundation, since cavities or underground conduits can seriously affect the stability of structures. This aspect constitutes the main local geotechnical constraint.
