Types of ground in Cortes

In the municipality of Cortes, soils are mainly composed of fine sands and silts, followed by detrital materials such as sandstones, conglomerates and flysch. This predominance of loosely granular soils implies generally adequate bearing capacity, but it is essential to analyse natural compaction and the presence of fines that may affect the foundations. The occasional presence of gravels and compact sands improves ground-support conditions, whereas highly permeable aquifer levels must be assessed for potential risks of suffosion and drainage beneath shallow or deep foundations.

Seismicity in Cortes is high, with more than 150 events recorded over the last three decades and a maximum magnitude of 5.2, which means this factor must be considered rigorously in the structural design of all new developments. In addition, the presence of carbonate materials such as limestones and dolomites indicates the possibility of karst processes, which requires a detailed verification of the karst before defining the final foundation level. Since the bedrock is not clayey, the risk of expansivity is ruled out, with seismicity and the possible presence of karst cavities being the main geotechnical constraints in the area.
