In Cocentaina, the geological substrate is predominantly composed of limestones, dolomites and marbles, which provides a base with high bearing capacity and favourable conditions for shallow or deep foundations. Fine sandstones, silts and, to a lesser extent, compact gravels and sands appear locally, but they usually do not significantly affect the overall behaviour of the ground. The generally low permeability of these formations limits the risk of subsidence associated with groundwater, although it is important to consider the possibility of localised flow through superficial aquifers.

As regards seismicity, Cocentaina exhibits very low seismic activity, with only 6 events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 3.1, so it is not considered a relevant factor for structural design. However, the presence of carbonate materials implies a risk of karst-related phenomena, which must be specifically checked before undertaking any foundation works, since the existence of voids may pose a stability problem. Since the substrate is not clayey, the risk of expansivity is ruled out, and the main aspect to be controlled will be the possible presence of cavities associated with karst.
