Types of ground in Chinchón

In Chinchón, the dominant geological substrate is composed of limestones, dolomites and marbles, occasionally accompanied by gypsum, anhydrite and salts. The significant presence of carbonate materials implies an excellent bearing capacity for most foundations, provided that the structures are not supported in areas with gypsum and salts owing to the potential risk of dissolution. Occasional layers of compact gravels and sands are also suitable for foundation purposes, although it is essential to characterise their compactness. The high permeability of the subsoil, linked to the existence of extensive aquifers, may influence the hydraulic behaviour of the foundations, and therefore must be considered when preparing the geotechnical study.

With seismic activity of 53 events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude value (Mmax) of 3,3, the seismicity in Chinchón may be considered noteworthy, although without reaching critical values for normal building. The development of karst processes is significant in this municipality due to the predominance of limestones and dolomites, so it is recommended to thoroughly verify the presence of cavities before proceeding with any foundation project. As regards expansivity, the non-clayey substrate rules out risks associated with expansive clays. The main constraint is the need to study and mitigate the possible effects of karst when defining the most suitable foundation solution.
