Types of ground in Cervo
The municipality of Cervo has a geological substrate dominated by sandstones, conglomerates and flysch. These materials provide a good bearing capacity and allow solutions for shallow (direct) foundations in most situations. These types of soils, together with the occasional presence of slates, schists and igneous rocks such as granites and gneisses, offer a generally stable base for supporting structures. Hard clays and marls occur only very locally and do not significantly affect the usual foundation options. The predominant permeability is low, with the possibility of limited shallow aquifers, so it is advisable to control drainage and groundwater during the construction phase.
With regard to geotechnical risks, Cervo is characterised by very low seismic activity, with only about 8 events over 30 years and moderate magnitudes (Mmax 4.2), which means that the seismic effect is not usually a determining factor for structural design. The municipality is not affected by karst processes or by expansive soils, since the non-clayey substrate rules out the risk of expansivity. In summary, the stability and strength of the siliciclastic materials represent the main aspect to consider in local geotechnical studies.
