Types of ground in Cervelló

In Cervelló, carbonate materials predominate, such as limestones, dolomites and marbles, which determines a rocky substrate with high bearing capacity for conventional foundations. Secondary formations, such as sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, together with the occasional presence of gypsum, anhydrite and salts, introduce local variability in ground competence. Slates, schists and hard clays are in the minority, so the risk of differential settlement is usually low. The low overall permeability contributes to ground stability, although aquifers may exist at depth and should be investigated in particular cases.

Seismic activity in Cervelló is moderate, with 15 events over the last 30 years and a low maximum magnitude (Mmax 3.1), so the seismic risk is limited and does not constitute the main constraint for structural design. The non-clayey substrate practically rules out the presence of significant expansivity. However, the intense presence of carbonate materials makes it necessary to carry out a specific check of the development of karst features before executing the foundations, as these could affect the stability or integrity of the supports. In this context, the geotechnical study should focus especially on establishing the continuity of the sound rock and on ruling out active or passive karst phenomena as the main constraint for the project.
