Types of ground in Castropol
In Castropol, soils formed by slates and schists predominate, accounting for almost the entire geological substrate. This lithology is characterised by its high bearing capacity and stable behaviour, allowing conventional direct foundations except in specific areas where clay or marl occur, which are infrequent. The permeability of these formations is generally very low, which contributes to ground stability, although it may favour the appearance of limited near-surface aquifers.
The recorded seismicity in Castropol is very low, with fewer than ten events over thirty years and magnitudes below 4, implying low seismic risk and little impact on structural design. However, given that possible karst phenomena may occur within the municipality, it is essential to verify the presence of cavities and dissolution processes before proceeding with any foundation, as these can seriously compromise the stability of new structures. The main geotechnical limiting factor will be the identification and assessment of the karst, rather than expansiveness, which is ruled out by the non-clayey nature of the substrate.
