Types of ground in Caspe

In Caspe, sandstones, conglomerates and flysch predominate as geotechnical materials, combined with significant percentages of fine sands and silts. These soils generally present a good bearing capacity, which facilitates shallow foundation solutions in most cases. The occasional presence of limestones, dolomites, marbles and layers of gypsum, anhydrite and salts adds a certain degree of heterogeneity, but the low proportion of problematic soils reduces the need for special precautions, except in specific areas. It is essential to verify the continuity and quality of the supporting materials before definitively defining the foundation type.

As regards seismic activity, Caspe shows a very low level, with only 4 events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 2.3, which rules out seismicity as a relevant design condition for the structural design. As the substratum is non-clayey, the risk of expansivity is ruled out, favouring long-term stability. One point of attention is the occasional presence of gypsum, anhydrite and salts—materials susceptible to dissolution—so it is recommended to carry out specific studies in areas where these materials may affect the foundation. Local heterogeneity and possible dissolutions therefore constitute the main aspect to be analysed during the geotechnical study in Caspe.
