Types of ground in Case
In the municipality of Caso, a substrate predominates mainly comprising limestones, dolomites and marbles, with a significant presence of shales and schists, as well as muds and peats in localised areas. The carbonate formations suggest good bearing capacity under normal conditions, although areas with muds and peats should be avoided as a foundation base due to their high compressibility. The low permeability of the materials allows for the presence of shallow aquifers, which may affect consolidation if drainage is not properly managed.
With regard to geotechnical aspects, seismicity in Caso is considered moderate, with 16 recorded events over the last 30 years and a maximum magnitude of less than 4.5, so the seismic impact on structural design is limited. Given the dominant presence of carbonate materials, there is a potential risk of karstification, which must be thoroughly investigated prior to any foundation project. As the substrate is non-clayey, the risk of expansivity is ruled out. The main geotechnical constraint in Caso is the possible presence of karst cavities within the carbonate formations, which requires specific studies in advance of carrying out any foundation.
