In Carballeda de Valdeorras, the dominant ground is made up mostly of slates and schists, representing around 85% of the substrate, whereas granites, gneisses and other igneous rocks are present only occasionally. These lithologies give the ground a high bearing capacity and very low compressibility, which favours the choice of shallow surface foundations in most cases, always bearing in mind the low permeability of the substrate, which may affect drainage and the appearance of shallow aquifers.

Seismicity in the municipality is considered high, with more than 150 recorded events over 30 years, although the maximum magnitude observed (Mmax 3.7) keeps structural risks within moderate parameters. No karstic processes are identified and, since the substrate is non-clayey, the risk of expansivity is ruled out. The main geotechnical constraint in the area is low permeability, which may affect the hydrogeotechnical behaviour of the ground during excavations and foundations.
