Types of ground in Cadreita
In Cadreita, the dominant geotechnical substrate is composed of compacted gravels and sands, providing excellent mechanical characteristics and high bearing capacity for the foundations of buildings. The significant presence of sandstones, conglomerates and flysch reinforces this favourable behaviour. However, the occasional occurrence of gypsum, anhydrite and salts introduces an additional factor requiring attention, as these materials may exhibit dissolution phenomena and potential differential settlements. It is crucial to avoid masses of water and to take extra precautions in areas where fine sands, silts or hard clays crop out, as these can alter the uniformity of the supporting ground.
The area experiences high seismicity, with more than 150 events over 30 years and a maximum recorded magnitude of 5.2, so the seismic analysis must be integrated into the structural design. On the other hand, the non-clayey substrate rules out risks associated with ground expansivity. However, since formations susceptible to karstification are located there, it is essential to check for cavities before starting any foundation work. In Cadreita, the main geotechnical limiting factor is the combination of significant seismic activity and the potential presence of karstic and gypsum-bearing ground.
