In Cabrales, the geotechnical substrata are predominantly formations of limestones, dolomites and marbles—materials with high compactness and strength that provide excellent bearing capacity for foundations, particularly when the ground is intact and not fractured. In a smaller proportion, slates and schists are found, which exhibit intermediate strength, and only a small fraction corresponds to hard clays and marls. The generally low permeability of these ground conditions favours stability, although the presence of discontinuities must be assessed for the design of the footings.

The area shows high seismicity, with around 200 events over 30 years, although the maximum magnitude reported (Mmax 4.2) is moderate and should be considered in structural design for sensitive infrastructure. Given the dominant calcareous nature, the development of karst processes is one of the main geotechnical constraints in Cabrales; therefore, the presence of cavities or underground conduits must be strictly verified before any foundation work. As it is a non-clayey substratum, the risk of expansiveness is ruled out as a relevant factor in this area.
