Types of ground in Cabanillas
In Cabanillas, the dominant substrate consists of fine sands and silts, accompanied by formations of sandstone, conglomerates and flysch, as well as the occasional presence of limestones, dolomites, marbles and bodies of water. These materials, especially the sands and silts, exhibit moderate bearing capacity, which may vary depending on the degree of compaction and moisture. The compact gravels and sands, although less frequent, provide foundation planes with greater strength, ideal for buildings that require additional stability. The high permeability of these soils, favoured by the extent of productive aquifers, implies that drainage conditions and the control of groundwater must be strictly considered in the foundation design.
With regard to seismicity, Cabanillas records high activity, with 200 events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude (Mmax) of 5.2. This requires structural design to include seismic action as a relevant load. The expansiveness analysis rules out risks associated with clayey soils, since the substrate is not clayey, which simplifies the preventive measures against volumetric movements. The main factor to consider in geotechnical studies in this municipality is therefore ensuring structural suitability for seismic loadings and managing permeability, in order to guarantee the safety of the foundations.
