Types of ground in Burgos
In the municipality of Burgos, formations of gypsum, anhydrite and salts predominate, together with compact gravels and sands, as well as limestones and dolomites. This combination implies the presence of strata with good bearing capacity, especially in granular and rocky soils. However, the significant presence of gypsum and salts poses a potential risk of dissolution, which must be taken into account when planning deep foundations or shallow foundations on these materials, in order to prevent differential settlements or loss of support.
Seismicity in Burgos is very low, with only 4 events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 1.7, so it is not a relevant factor in structural design. The non-clayey substrate rules out expansivity problems, while the absence of karst eliminates risks associated with underground cavities. The main geotechnical constraint in the area is the possible dissolution of gypsum and salts, which must be assessed in detail during the geotechnical study campaign.
