In Burgo de Osma-Ciudad de Osma, sandstone, conglomerates and flysch predominate as the geotechnical substrate; these account for close to half of the soils, providing a competent basis for shallow foundations and usually allowing an adequate bearing capacity. The occasional presence of compact gravels and sands is also observed, which is favourable for construction uses. It is noteworthy that gypsum, anhydrite and salts occur in a certain proportion, introducing a possible risk of dissolution for the foundations. The lithological heterogeneity makes it advisable to carry out proper ground recognition before defining the most appropriate foundation type.

The seismicity in the area is classified as very low, with barely any significant event over thirty years and low magnitudes, which minimises the seismic impact on structural design. Although the swelling potential of the clays is subordinate to or limited by the climatic conditions, the possible development of karst processes at depth and in the surrounding area must be verified before carrying out foundation works, given the presence of gypsum and possible cavities. Therefore, the main factor to be assessed in the geotechnical study will be the identification and characterisation of zones with soluble materials and potential for karstification.
