Types of ground in Bullas
In Bullas, the predominant geological substrate is composed of limestones, dolomites and marbles, which gives rise to a dominant rock-like behaviour with high bearing capacities for foundations. Detrital materials such as sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, as well as the occasional presence of fine sands and silts, can be found in certain areas, although their development is more limited. The few areas of hard clays and marls rarely affect the design, except in very localised works. The generally low permeability also limits the occurrence of settlements due to consolidation and favours shallow (direct) foundations, although it is essential to identify any possible localised perched surface aquifers in more permeable layers.
From the point of view of geotechnical risks, seismicity in the municipality is very low, with fewer than 10 recorded low-magnitude events, so the influence of seismic actions on structural design is minimal. However, the dominant calcareous lithology implies a potential for the development of karst-related phenomena; therefore, it is essential to check for voids before carrying out deep or shallow foundations in order to ensure the stability of the future project. The non-clayey nature of the substrate rules out the problems associated with expansive soils, with the main limiting factor being the proper investigation of possible underground cavities due to karstification.
