In Brión, the predominant geological substrate consists of sandstones, conglomerates and flysch—materials that occupy most of the municipality and provide a firm base for buildings. The slates and schists present add some heterogeneity to the ground, but in general these lithologies provide adequate bearing capacity for most foundation systems, allowing conventional solutions. Fine sands and silts, present only on a localised basis, usually do not condition the design except locally. The permeability of these materials is low, so groundwater is not usually a significant drawback.

With regard to geotechnical behaviour, Brión shows very low seismicity, with only about 9 events recorded over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 2.2, which does not impose any significant seismic demands on structural design. No karst phenomena have been identified in the area, and the non-clayey substrate rules out the risk of expansivity, minimising potential defects caused by soil swelling or shrinkage. Therefore, the main geotechnical constraint for Brión is usually linked to the low permeability and the possible presence of shallow aquifers; these aspects should be considered in the design phase in order to optimise the foundations and water management.
