Types of ground in Borja
In Borja, soils predominate that are made up of fine sands and silts, as well as carbonate formations of limestones, dolomites and marbles. These lithologies generally provide a good bearing capacity for shallow foundations, and it is common to find suitable levels for the transmission of building loads. However, areas with gravel, compact sands, as well as the occasional presence of gypsum, anhydrite and salts introduce local variability in conditions, and must be assessed in each case in order to avoid dissolution risks and ensure the stability of the foundation.
Seismic activity in Borja is very low, with only 8 events in the last 30 years and a low maximum magnitude, so this aspect does not represent a relevant constraint in structural design. However, the potentially karstic nature of the subsoil requires prior verification of cavities or voids, which is a critical element before any foundation work. The non-clayey nature of the subsoil rules out swelling or expansivity risks, placing the main factor for attention on the possible presence of karst phenomena and associated dissolution processes linked to the gypsum.
