Types of ground in Beriáin
The municipality of Beriáin is characterised mainly by the presence of limestones, dolomites and marbles, which make up the dominant substratum and provide excellent conditions for foundation works, given their high bearing capacity. Punctually, clays and hard marls may occur, as well as gypsum, anhydrite and salts, although less frequently; in these areas, it is advisable to assess local strength and stability due to the risk associated with the dissolution of gypsum and salts. Fine sands and silts represent a smaller proportion and could punctually reduce bearing capacity, but they do not constitute a generalised constraint in the area for the design of foundations.
With regard to additional geotechnical aspects, Beriáin has moderate seismicity, with 14 events detected over the last 30 years, although all of low magnitude (Mmax 2.7), so the seismic influence on buildings is limited. The non-clayey substratum virtually rules out the risk of expansiveness, providing additional safety for the stability of structures. Verification of potential dissolution processes in the presence of gypsum and salts will be the main limiting factor in the zones where these materials occur; a detailed geotechnical study is recommended prior to the execution of foundations in those areas.
