The development of karst processes is an obligatory consideration when founding on carbonate rocks, as cavities and dissolutions can compromise the stability of the building; therefore, it is essential to verify the existence of karst at the design stage. Classifying the bedrock as "non-clayey" rules out expansivity as a relevant conditioning factor, focusing attention on the characterisation of cavities and the integrity of the rock mass as critical factors for the design of any geotechnical study solution.
