Types of ground in Benabarre

In Benabarre, limestones, dolomites and marbles predominate as the substrate, accompanied in smaller proportions by sandstone and flysch formations, as well as hard clays and, in isolated cases, gypsum and salts. These lithologies usually provide good bearing capacity for foundations, although their compact nature and low permeability may influence drainage management. The presence of gypsiferous and soluble materials introduces the risk of localised dissolution, an aspect that is relevant when selecting the type of foundation, avoiding areas where these materials crop out or predominate in the ground profile.

Benabarre is characterised by high seismicity, with 200 recorded events over 30 years, although with a maximum magnitude of M4; while moderate, seismic activity should be taken into account when designing the structure. Given the carbonate nature of much of its substrate, there is the possibility of karstification, so it is essential to carry out a detailed verification before executing any foundation in order to rule out voids or subsurface cavities. The risk of expansivity can be dismissed due to the predominance of a non-clayey substrate; the main geotechnical constraint in Benabarre is therefore the potential presence of karst and soluble materials in the soil.
