In Barrika, a substrate is predominant, consisting mainly of limestones, dolomites and marbles, which provides a solid foundation for footings and, in general, ensures good bearing capacities. The secondary presence of fine sands, silts and, to a lesser extent, sandstones and gravels, suggests a certain degree of local heterogeneity, although the dominant formations minimise the occurrence of compressible or loose soils. It is essential to assess the thickness of any softer near-surface layer before defining the most suitable foundation type, although the inherent strength of the rock mass usually allows direct and safe solutions.

The level of seismicity in the area is considered notable, with 94 events recorded over the last 30 years, although the maximum magnitude observed does not exceed 3.7, so seismic risk is low to moderate and easily manageable in structural design. Given the lithological composition, the non-clayey substrate avoids risks from expansivity, ruling out the need to treat this behaviour in foundation design. The main geotechnical constraint lies in possible lateral variations in the near-surface materials and the careful verification of the regularity of the contact with the rock mass.
