Types of ground in Barbadás
In Barbadás, the subsoil is characterised mainly by the presence of sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, which make up the greater part of the local geology. These materials, together with the occasional presence of shales and schists, generally provide a good bearing capacity for shallow foundations, provided that the competent horizon is reached and no saturated areas are located close to masses of water. These are low-permeability soils, so the accumulation of water is usually limited to shallow aquifers, an aspect that is relevant for drainage planning and the stability of the foundations.
The seismicity in Barbadás is classified as moderate, with 17 events recorded over thirty years and a maximum magnitude of 3.3, which implies routine but not restrictive considerations for structural design. There is no presence of karst and no expansivity problems are detected, since the non-clayey substrate rules out this risk.
