Types of ground in Avila
In the municipality of Ávila, the geological subsoil is dominated by igneous rocks such as granite and gneiss, with occasional occurrences of phyllites and schists. These formations are characterised by high solidity and low deformability, factors that translate into a high bearing capacity for shallow or deep foundations. Sandstones, conglomerates and compact gravel and sand deposits appear only very occasionally and do not represent widespread problems for the execution of structural supports. The low ground permeability limits the possibility of natural drainage, so there may be accumulations of water in shallow aquifers in certain areas.
Seismicity in Ávila is moderate, with 32 recorded events over the last 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 2.8; these values do not reach a level that would significantly condition structural design. No sectors affected by karst have been detected and there are no soils with an expansive character, since an unargillaceous subsoil predominates, ruling out expansivity risks in advance. In conclusion, the main geotechnical constraint in the area is the massive and resistant nature of the igneous rocks, which favours a safe behaviour for most conventional foundation typologies.
