In Atxondo, sandstones, conglomerates and flysch predominate—materials of fundamentally detrital nature that offer good bearing capacities for most foundations. In specific areas, limestones, dolomites and marbles are identified, as well as smaller zones of fine sands and silts; the former provide stiffness, whereas looser soils require localised analyses of compaction and settlement. Permeability is low to moderate and generally does not represent a significant constraint for the drainage of groundwater, although it is advisable to consider the possible presence of shallow aquifers.

The recorded seismicity in Atxondo is very low, with a maximum of 2 events over 30 years and low magnitudes, so it does not constitute a relevant requirement for structural design. However, the presence of carbonate materials (limestones and dolomites) means that karst-related phenomena must be ruled out or verified before executing any deep or shallow foundation, as cavities or dissolution may occur. The non-clayey substrate eliminates the risk of expansiveness, so geotechnical control should focus on confirming the stability of the calcareous ground and the integrity of the rock mass.
