Types of ground in Astorga
In Astorga, the dominant subsoil is composed mainly of slates and schists, metamorphic materials with competent behaviour and low deformability, which favours good bearing capacity for shallow foundations. Occasional layers of fine sands and silts may present zones of lower strength and imply the need to check thicknesses and continuity before defining the foundation type, although their low frequency generally does not represent a significant constraint. Ground impermeability conditions reduce the risk of moisture rising, although they may allow isolated shallow aquifers in local areas.
Seismicity in Astorga is very low, with hardly any events recorded in the last 30 years and a low maximum magnitude, so it does not represent a relevant consideration in structural design. There are no karstic phenomena or risk of expansivity, since the subsoil does not have an argillaceous nature. Thus, the main conditioning factor for the foundation will be the appropriate characterisation of thicknesses of secondary soils and the correct assessment of surface hydrogeological conditions.
