In Asteasu, limestone, dolomites and marbles predominate, followed by sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, while the presence of granite and other igneous rocks is occasional. The hard rock substrate guarantees high bearing capacity, allowing direct and shallow foundations in most cases, although, punctually, plaster and salts may be found, introducing a certain risk of dissolution that should be verified. The reduced permeability of these rocks suggests stable behaviour, although shallow aquifers of limited extent may appear.

Seismic activity in the area is very low, with a single minor event during the last few decades and a low maximum magnitude, which minimises this risk in structural design. Despite the predominance of non-clayey materials—and therefore without any risk of expansiveness—the possible presence of karst phenomena derived from the limestones makes it essential to investigate the existence of cavities or instabilities before proceeding with foundation design, with this factor becoming the main local geotechnical constraint.
