Types of ground in Arico
In the municipality of Arico, geological formations made up of sandstones, conglomerates and flysch predominate, representing more than 50% of the ground, followed by granite, gneiss and other igneous rocks. These soils show good strength and stability, with low permeability at the surface but potential presence of aquifers at greater depth; factors that favour adequate bearing capacities and allow for the adoption of shallow or semi-deep foundations, although a specific geotechnical study will always be advisable to verify the stratigraphy and the exact properties of the ground at the points where new structures are to be implemented.
Seismic activity in Arico is notable, with 56 events recorded over the last 30 years, although the maximum magnitude observed (Mmax 3.1) remains at low levels. The risk associated with clay expansion is negligible, as no predominantly clay-rich strata are identified and no karstification is found in the area. Thus, the main geotechnical factor to be taken into account in Arico lies in the heterogeneity of the sedimentary materials and the possible presence of deep aquifers; these aspects must be characterised to ensure the suitability of the proposed foundation solutions.
