Types of ground in Arévalo
In Arévalo, the dominant geotechnical substrate is mainly made up of compact gravels and sands, which provide an excellent base for shallow foundations owing to their high bearing capacity and good mechanical behaviour. In addition, to a lesser extent, sandstones, conglomerates, flysch, as well as calcareous and schistous units, are found; these materials are occasional and have variable properties. The widespread presence of aquifers with moderate permeability should be verified, but in general it does not limit the conventional use of foundations.
The area shows very low seismicity, with only a single recorded event in the last 30 years and a low maximum magnitude, which rules out the need for strict seismic design criteria. The risk associated with clay expansivity is limited, since expansive clays are only present in a subordinate way or in regions where the climatic impact reduces their activity. As the main condition, the suitability of these ground conditions is highlighted by the predominance of compact granular materials, which provide stability and reduce risks associated with phenomena of expansivity or seismic movements.
