Types of ground in Altsasu/Alsasua
In Altsasu/Alsasua, limestone, dolomite and marble formations predominate, accounting for two thirds of the outcropping soils and providing a high bearing-capacity foundation for shallow and deep foundations. Sandstones, conglomerates and flysch also occur, although in smaller proportions, maintaining generally competent characteristics. The scarce presence of fine sands and silts indicates that consolidation problems or differential settlements are unlikely, and the low permeability of the subsoil limits water migration, which is a relevant aspect for the overall stability of the works.
Seismic activity in this municipality is very low (4 events in 30 years, with a maximum magnitude of 1.9), meaning that the seismic risk is practically negligible in structural design. However, it is essential to verify the presence of karstification in the limestones and dolomites before carrying out any foundation, as dissolution can produce voids or underground cavities that would compromise structural stability. As the subsoil is non-clayey, the risk of expansivity is ruled out, making karst risk the primary controlling factor in the geotechnical study.
